📊 How To Choose The Right Data Visualization (Decision Tree), a helpful chart selection diagram that groups charts based on their purpose and what exactly you want to represent with data — from comparison and composition to distribution and relationship. Put together by Andrew Abela.Word of caution: personally I use the diagram to guide me in the right direction, but choosing the right chart type will require a proper check and test with the data that you have in front of you. This holds true especially for charts in dashboards, where the space is limited and the density of information is critical. In complex environments with a lot of complex data, nothing is more harmful than oversimplification.And most importantly: don’t forget to apply usability testing to your data visualization. Ask users what they see. Ask they to spot outliers. Draw conclusions. Ask how they would act on numbers, and what information they need to decide on next steps.
